hello and thank you to those of you who have attended art class this year. it has been a bumper year with lots of great classes, congratulations to you for all your fantastic creations.
I spent some classes demonstrating on the use of white and also texture in winter landscapes. The first thing to note is just how many different types of white there are, in fact what appears to be white in a painting often is not. The same is true of drawings, where what seems like white paper is actually a light shade value. It is common to use cool shades of blue and purple to pant snow but really you can use any colour, as snow simply reflects the colours of the environment around it. titanium white is an warm white, while zink white is cool.
White is not normally used with pure, translucent water colour because of its opacifying effect. indeed, it is difficult to use in all painting because of this but also because it turns colours pastel so that they loose their intensity.
Texture is detail done as a suggestion of surface quality to avoid the need to copy every single tiny bit of absolute detail. Chrome would need completely smooth application, for example. In opposite, rusty eroded metal is pitted and rough surfaced, so needs a broken up rough application of medium. The best thing about artistic practice is that it never stops teaching you something new.
All the best for 2025
